Warp X has now completed a slate of ten films with the world premiere of Paul Wright’s For Those in Peril in the ‘Semaine de la Critique’ section of the Cannes Film Festival of 2013. This brings to an end the slate of low budget films that began with the premieres of A Complete History of My Sexual Failures and Donkey Punch at the Sundance International Film Festival in 2008.

Warp X was set up in 2005 by Mark Herbert and Robin Gutch as a response by Warp Films to the public tender from the UK Film Council and Film4 to run the Low Budget Film Initiative to develop and produce a slate of lower budget films for the theatrical market. The key partners in the bid at the time were Optimum Releasing (later Studio Canal UK) and Screen Yorkshire. EM Media was a partner for the first six films. The BFI replaced the UK Film Council as one of the lead partners when UK Film Council activities were transferred.

The purpose of the slate was to make lower budget films, using a digital production model, with a creative focus on new and emergent talent and producers. All the films have been directed by directors making their first or second feature film, with accompanying opportunities for newer producers, writers, cast and crew. The Warp X model included an innovative profit participation scheme to ensure that everyone involved in the films would receive a proportionate share of revenue after the deduction of sales and distribution commissions and expenses.

Warp Films will continue to make some lower budget films with outstanding emergent talent, but the Warp X slate is now at an end. Warp Films would like to thank all of the many people who have contributed to the success of the slate.
